Gus, My Personal Angel

Often in my life, I have been aware of the Lord’s protection. He has covered me with His wings during storms; He has carried me when I could not walk alone; He has surrounded me during miles of travel; He has strengthened me when I was afraid; and He has comforted me when I was hurting. Most of those times, I have been consciously aware of God protecting me. But, occasionally I have seen His presence embodied in a person who serves as His angel to watch over me. Those encounters are powerful!

Recently, I went to lunch with my sweet husband. I was a little weak from the chemotherapy treatment I had received four days earlier, so he went to get the car for me after we finished our meal. As I walked out of the cool restaurant into the hot sun, I became lightheaded and began to fall. As I slowly slid to the ground, a very kind man reached out and took my arm to help me gently sit down and not injure myself. By that time, Chuck was at my side. He and my personal angel (I call him Gus) held my hands as I turned over on my knees and then stood up. I did not hit my head on the concrete walkway nor did I injure any other part of my body. I took a moment to collect myself, then walked to our car. It all happened so fast, but I had a moment to look my angel in the eyes and thank him for his kindness. And, then he was gone. The image of my angel Gus will remain in my mind’s eye forever, a constant reminder that “The Lord is my protector; He is my strong fortress. My God is my protection, and with Him I am safe. He protects me like a shield; He defends me and keeps me safe” (Ps. 18:2, Good News Translation).

As we drove home, Chuck and I praised the Lord for protecting me! A fall is always debilitating, but after my brain surgery in February and now while I am receiving chemotherapy for cancer, a bad fall could have been devastating. BUT GOD sent my personal angel Gus right when I needed him for protection and care. Now, I must give God the glory for fulfilling His promises on an ordinary day and in my ordinary life. You and I are always safe in Him!

Recently, I listened to a delightful Christian audiobook, “Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy,” by Debbie Macomber. Based on Psalm 23:6, the book is about angels sent from God to intervene on the behalf of God’s children. Shirley (not “Surely”), Goodness, and Mercy are often assigned to people in despair. While performing life-changing miracles, the angels experience humorous adventures. And they often call for backup angels when needed. God truly sent His angel Gus to protect me from injury when I fell. I will forever be grateful!

Let’s be reminded daily that God is with us to shield and protect us. Be assured that He has assigned His angels to care for you. And when you receive His gift of protection, give Him the glory and share your story. Just as my angel Gus watched over me, your angels are watching over you!
